Knee pain Causes- medical conditions and Knee pain relief
Knee pain is one the irritating condition which can make anyone
life miserable. Stair descending places 346% of body weight (BW) on your knee
joint and weak knee joints leads to knee pain.
Yes, in a research
published in the Journal of Biomechanics stated that stair descending shows the highest level of peak forces on knee joint followed by 316% BW ascending stairs
and 261% BW while level walking.
KNEE PAIN
In another study related to knee pain, published in the
Journal of “The bone joint and joint surgery. American volume.”, it was found
that knee joint faces 146.6 newton-meters while going down in stairs and only
57.1-newton meters when going up on the stairs.
One common question that arises is Why Knee pain occurs even when there is no movement?
If there is no injury then it is possible that the person is suffering from a degenerative disease such as
-Osteoarthritis
-Rheumatoid arthritis
-Tendonitis
-Bursitis
Before, entering the causes of knee pain we first need to
understand a few things about the knee joint as it is very important in understanding knee pain. It is the largest joint in the human body. Tibia, Fibula, Patella, and Femur are the bones articulated to construct the bony structure of the knee
joint. One joint is made of tibia and femur named Tibiofemoral Joint and second, femur and patella knew as Patellofemoral joint.
Symptoms of Knee pain
The seriousness of the knee joint pain can change, from a
minor pain to extreme and impairing pain. Different signs and symptoms that
comes with the knee pain are:
- Trouble weight-bearing or strolling because of the knee
pain,
- Limping because of distress,
- Trouble stepping up or down stairs because of tendon pain (sprain),
- Locking of the knee (unable to twist the knee), stiffness
in ligaments
- Redness and expanding,
- Failure to extend the knee, and
- Moving load to the alternative knee and foot
- Swelling and redness
Medical conditions
1 1. Osteoarthritis- It is one of the most common degenerative
diseases which is faced by most of the population. In this, the bone mineral
density is reduced and bone microarchitecture deteriorates. The bone
deteriorates with use and age.
2 2. Knee Bursitis -
A sac known as bursa is present above your body’s joint and has fluid.
It reduces friction when joint moves. Repetitive bending and kneeling, sudden or
direct impact on the knee can irritate the bursa. That leads to pain and swelling.
3. Patellar Tendonitis – Tendons are the tough
bands of fibrous tissues that connect bones to muscles. It can be understood as the inflammation in your tendons that connects the patella (knee cap) to the
shin bone. Its main cause is repetitive and impactful movements. It is also known
as Jumper's knee.
4. Hip, back, and foot pain – Due to lower back
pain, hip pain or sciatica and foot pain we generally change our gate (walking)
pattern. This leads to uneven stress and weight distribution on a knee joint. It
is one of the major causes of knee pain in patients.

5. Dislocated knee cap – This is a condition in
which your patella or knee cap dislocates from its original position. Mainly it
is seen due to valgus movement or internal rotation of femur while foot and
femur fixed down. The second reason could be a direct blow to the knee.
6. Gout – It is another medical condition seen in
those patients who have a high level of uric in their blood. In this condition, the uric acid crystals are build up in the knee joint.
Knee pain relief
- Do Use RICE (REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, ELEVATION) – I know many of you might have read the article of Dr. Gabe Mirkin (who coined the term RICE ) stating that the RICE may cause a delay in recovery of an injury but it is important to know that he said it in the context of acute injuries. RICE method has shown visible effects in knee pain relief with a decrease in swelling.
- Reduce weight – Yes, if you are overweight then you should consider losing some weight for knee pain relief. As the research published in the journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism concludes that every pound of weight loss resulted in 4 fold reduction in the load exerted on knee. This research shows the importance of weight reduction in knee pain relief.
- Lack of muscular strength and flexibility –Joints are surrounded by muscles and flexibility and stretchability play an important role in joint ROM (Range of Motion). Tight and contracted muscles lead to a reduction in joint ROM and that results in more wear and tear in ligaments and tendons of the joint. Weak muscles are directly linked to the unstable joints which lead to knee pain.
- Exercise- To get relief from knee pain complete rest should be avoided. The person must do some aerobic activities which produce less impact on the knee joint. You can consider doing activities like stationary bicycling, swimming, walking, and Tai-chi. Don’t be embarrassed to use walking-aid. Here are some general exercises and stretching for knee joint pain strengthening that might help you.
“Movement is the only thing which keeps human beings alive. you can see it in a heart monitor or can understand by your own heartbeats if they stop life ends.”
*If pain persists do consult your physical therapist or
doctor. These are general recommendations.
BONUS:
I place It for those
readers who read the whole article.
Many people complaints about the pain behind the knee. It is
also named as behind the knee pain. This condition is not different from any
other knee pain. To reduce the back of knee pain you can use the above methods. If
the pain persists after that do consult your doctor or physical therapist.
